INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS IN JAPAN

INTELLIGENTA TRANSPORTSYSTEM I JAPAN

ITS work in Japan is extensive and will appreciably change Japanese infrastructure and society in the long term. Through coordinated input by industry, Japan hopes to realise citizens' wishes to minimise holdups, enhance traffic safety and reduce environmental destruction by traffic. Industry has provided impetus; it realised early on the potential of ITS in the form of new markets. The aim of ITS is not to reduce use of vehicles; but it is in the interest of Japanese vehicle industry to make vehicles more pleasant and attractive. Prioritised areas for better navigation are VICS, ARTS and SSVS, for automatic driver support VICS, ASV, UTMS, ARTS, SSVS, SPMWR and WCS, for route guidance VICS, UTMS, ARTS, WCS, for more efficient communications systems UTMS and ARTS. Sceptics say that the technology is still too expensive and complexity too great, and don't believe that technology can control people's movement patterns and transport needs; the amount of information to be processed is enormous and will cause radio smog. ITS is not a global solution to traffic problems. VICS = vehicle information and communication system, ARTS = advanced road and traffic system, SSVS = super smart vehicle system, ASV = advanced safety vehicle, UTMS = universal transportation management system, SPMWR = small power mm wave radar, WCS = wireless card system.
