REALIZING THE POTENTIAL OF INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS (ITS)
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) has great potential to provide both transportation system users and providers with tremendous benefits in terms of operational efficiency, safety, and time and cost savings. However, if ITS is to achieve its full potential, several things must be done to demonstrate those ITS benefits to the traveling public. Area jurisdictions need to put aside parochialism and combine their resources to efficiently manage transportation in their areas. State (provincial) departments of transportation need to allocate more ITS implementation funds to the local street system, and not just for traffic signal systems. Money needs to be spent in areas with serious problems that can be substantially improved through ITS. Finally, successes, especially those that benefit the average traveler, need to be publicized.
