LOS TOMATES INTERNATIONAL BORDER CROSSING

The Los Tomates International Border crossing connecting Brownsville, Texas, with Matamoros, Mexico, is scheduled for completion in March 1999. A summary of the project's major components provides a glimpse of the unique environmental and infrastructure elements that were a part of this project: issuance of a Presidential Permit for bridge construction, an elevated extension of US 77/83 (Interstate-69) to the border station, relocation of the city's Lincoln Park, a 1,300-m-long toll bridge constructed through an endangered species habitat, a 4,000-m relocation of the river levee, an 80-acre (32-ha) border station constructed adjacent to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Reserve, dedication of 167 acres (68 ha) along the river for continuance of a wildlife corridor, nine separate and sequential construction contracts, and coordination among the City of Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas Department of Transportation, General Services Administration, and their Mexican counterparts.
