HIGHWAY CHARACTERISTICS OR HUMAN ERROR

VIABILIDAD O IMPRUDENCIA

The main causes of traffic accidents are described together with some means of avoiding them. The author is of the opinion that in many cases where the accident has been attributed to dangerous driver behaviour, the driver was influenced by the characteristics of the road. Statistics show that 60 to 70% accidents occur when cars are travelling on a straight road, 25 to 30% on bends, and 10% at junctions (accidents at level crossings are negligible). Accident black spots are mainly at bends, junctions, narrow stretches, top of a hill and at level crossings. Experience has shown that judicious location of traffic signs and signals does a great deal towards preventing accidents. /TRRL/
