ALAMEDA WORK READY TO BEGIN
Work on the centerpiece of a $2.4-billion, 20-mi (32-km) long rail route connecting the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the U.S. freight rail network is ready to switch into high gear. On October 14, 1998, the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority approved a $712-million design-build contract for the corridor's biggest single contract: a 10-mi (16-km) long, 30-ft (9-m) deep trench. Challenges include more than 600 utility lines that must be protected, abandoned, or relocated. In addition, the construction team must contend with tight easements throughout the alignment and groundwater on the southern part of the trench. The budget includes a $200-million contingency for unknown construction conditions.
