IDEAS ON SOME NEW TYPES OF HIGHWAY SAFETY FENCE
IDEE SU ALCUNI NUOVI TIPI DI BARRIERE DI SICUREZZA STRADALI
This paper describes and illustrates a tensioned cable safety barrier in which two metal cables are supported by a split concrete member comprising the supporting post and base. The two symmetrical concrete components have built-in half sleeves in which the cables are clamped when the posts are bolted together. The pressure on the cables can be regulated by the bolts, thereby controlling the reaction of the cables under impact. These concrete supports are shielded by a plastic cover and are free standing on the pavement between suitably spaced fixed supports designed to break off longitudinally on impact, but providing strong lateral resistance. A variation of this type of barrier uses only the fixed break off posts, omitting the free standing concrete supports. A new modification of the rigidly supported continuous steel guardrail is also illustrated and briefly described. /TRRL/
