INFLUENCE OF MIXTURE FORMATION ON THE EFFICIENCY AND POLLUTANT EMISSION OF DIESEL ENGINES WITH DIRECT FUEL INJECTION

EINFLUSS DER GEMISCHBILDUNG AUF WIRKUNGSGRAD UND SCHADSTOFFEMISSION EINES DIESELMOTORS MIT DIREKTER EINSPRITZUNG

During the investigation of mixture formation and combustion in a diesel engine with direct fuel injection on the test bench the "influence characteristics" of various engine parameters were determined in a systematic series of tests. The tests results have been collected in the form of a so-called "motor atlas". The main conclusions regarding the optimisation of direct injection type diesel engines with respect to minimum fuel consumption, highest efficiency, maximum silence and minimum emission of undesirable exhaust gas constituents have been summarised in this publication. In addition the influence of exhaust and inert gas return and water injection on the emission of pollutants was examined. In certain selected tests from the series the processes of mixture formation and combustion were recorded by means of high-speed photography. /TRRL/
