LEGAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF SUICIDE AT THE WHEEL

SELBSTMORE AM STEUER AUS JURISTISCHER UND POSYCHOLOGISCHER SICHT

At the request of the Federal Minister of Transport the problem of suicide among drivers was investigated. The question is of great importance for general accident analysis and also for the law relating to accident and life insurance. In many cases policies exclude benefits by virtue of a suicide clause. The incidence of suicide is estimated at 8 per thousand of all fatal accidents by the insurance industry and at 0.3 % by a state prosecutors department. In any case the incidence of suicide in fatal accidents is greater than is generally supposed. To clear up suspicions in peculiar accident cases the cooperation of technical, medical and psychological experts with the criminologist is required. Great care must be exercised in deciding whether conclusive proof of suicide has been procided. /TRRL/
