SIMULATION MODEL OF A MULTI-SHUTTLE SYSTEM
This paper reports on a study of modelling a shuttle transportation system. There were three objectives, the first was to consider alternative ways of modelling traffic streams approaching the shuttle system, the second to develop a simulation model using various parameters to help explain the behaviour of shuttle systems and the third was to conduct sensitivity studies to observe how such a system responds to changes in model parameters. A ferry system in operation was chosen as an example and a simulation model was developed using GPSS. Transient and stationary behaviour patterns of the system were examined under various inputs and constraints. The effect of imbalance in the incoming traffic streams of both sides of the channel was investigated using various combinations of intensity parameters. Service contour lines were derived to determine the efficiency of the system. Non-stationary Weibull and stationary exponential models were used to simulate the incoming traffic streams and the results compared against actual data. It was found that, in general, when the comparisons were based on cumulative statistics, the stationary exponential model performed better. However, in the short run, the nonstationary Weibull model gave the better fit. /Author/TRRL/
