DREDGING BENEFITS FROM UNDERWATER BLASTING

Before dredging work is done, an appraisal of the various methods of rock fragmentation and bulking should be made, to decide upon the best method or combination of methods to be used. These include (1) the combined fragmentation, excavation method, (2) fragmentation by surface blasting, (3) shot hole blasting and (4) submarine controlled explosive engineering. This last method requires expensive materials and experienced divers to place explosives where they will make the desired craters. Even so, this method can prove to be the most economical procedure depending upon the conditions. The factors of depth, thickness to be dredged, condition and density of rock and the condition of the sea, all decide the equipment and methods to be used.
