THE PROPULSION OF COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE ENGINES ON GAS

GASBETRIEB VON NUTZFAHRZEUGMOTOREN

The results of studies comparing the gas-diesel engine and the pure diesel engine, with specific regard to ease in running, smoke emission and exhaust fume emission, are used by the Daimler-Benz Company as a guideline for the Otto-gas engine. The use of natural gas as a fuel and the contrast of the degree of effect of natural gas and the diesel engine are represented in numerous illustrations. The performance of the natural gas engine with regard to exhaust fume emission, odour and smoke nuisance are seen as dependent on specific use, medium compression and air ratio. The assessment of these studies led, in the case of mercedez-benz, to the construction of a six cylinder engine for buses with methane gas propulsion. The technical and commercial aspects of this construction are dealt with in the second section of this paper. /TRRL/
