THE RESULTS OF FRICTION TESTS CARRIED OUT IN MILAN ON EXPERIMENTAL PAVEMENTS CONTAINING CAST IRON PARTICLES

RISULTATI DI PROVE DI ATTRITO ESEGUITE NELLA CITTA DI MILANO SU PAVIMENTAZIONI SPERIMENTALI CON GRANULI DI GHISA

The results are presented of friction tests carried out between February 1973 and June 1974 on a test section of bituminous pavement containing cast iron particles as aggregate. These results show that the use of cast iron does not improve friction, the test pavement having no more skidding resistance than the normal types of bituminous surfacing which are less costly. A comparison with the friction values of other aggregates showed that porphyritic and calcareous aggregates gave the best results. It was therefore concluded that cast iron should be ignored as an aggregate in bituminous mixtures. Skidding resistance was measured with equipment developed by the Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne, Berks. /TRRL/
