FINITE ELEMENTS IN TRANSVERSE FRAME ANALYSIS
A typical transverse tanker frame has been analysed by the finite element method. Several analyses have been made to study the influence of modelling and element properties. It may be concluded that geometrical details have only local significance and most of the secondary stiffeners may be neglected in the plane stress analysis. This conclusion makes it possible to use a coarser mesh with more refined elements and it is shown that a better analysis is obtained more cheaply in this way. It is also shown that the mixture of various types of elements in the same analysis may lead to serious errors.
