SURVEY OF RECENT RESOURCE APPLICATIONS IN MICHIGAN
Remote sensing is making a direct contribution to the implementation of emerging land-use programs and legislation by state and local public agencies. It is being extensively used in the preparation of statewide inventories of Michigan's land resources, based on a four-level classification system. Specific applications have been directed toward implementing a number of Michigan and Federal laws, including the Farmland and Open Space Preservation Act, the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Act, the Shorelands Protection and Management Act, and the U. S. Coastal Zone Management Act. Through programs to encourage technology transfer, universities and other organizations are assisting Michigan-based government agencies and private organizations to make increasing use of remote sensing data for land-use regulation and management, shoreline protection and many other resource management and protection functions.
