IMPROVED OPERATION OF HID LAMPS
The application of HID lamps is expanding and any improvement in their operation could be beneficial. Rated values for these lamps are based on lamp operation off a standard reactor which provides a better operating condition than any commercially available ballast. The development of a FASER ballast to meet the needs of photographic applications has been found to provide advantages to general service metal halide and high-pressure sodium lamps. Results obtained with a FASER ballast versus a reactor ballast are discussed. Of greatest note is the change in power factor of the lamps to unity and the reduced current and current crest factors. This is accomplished by the multi-state resonate structure of the FASER ballast which eliminates the normally negative impedance character of the lamps. The benefits that this new ballast provides include the elimination of flicker, an increase in luminous efficacy, an increased lumen maintenance and energy conservation. A further xpected benefit would be an increase in lamp life. New methods of evaluating lamps performance are also presented. The results obtained indicate that the FASER ballast provides improved operation for the general service metal halide and high-pressure sodium HID lamps.
