ACOUSTIC EMISSION MONITORING OF MULTI-PASS SUBMERGED-ARC WELDING

The acoustic emission method has been used to detect the formation of flaws during submerged arc welding. This paper describes a technique that detects cracks and entrapped slag as the weld metal solidifies. Emissions from slag are also detected on subsequent weld passes over the defective region. Multi-pass welds in 6 in. thick carbon steel plates have been monitored using acoustic emission sensors that travel with the welding electrode. The detection system provides flaw location capability for immediate weld repair, reducing post-weld repair expenses. Weld monitoring parameters, experimental techniques, and data analysis are discussed. Typical experimental data are presented.
