RECORDING FLOODS AND FLOOD DAMAGE
As part of its basic mission, the U.S. Geological Survey has the responsibility for recording the stage, discharge, and areal extent of floods. Major floods are documented by collecting data in the field and then by reporting the data so that they are available to those who need the information. These two activities are discussed in this report. In conclusion, it is pointed out that a better job of providing the information users need would be possible if a better understanding of what those needs are was available, in terms of both the type of data and the timeliness of the data need.
