TOLL OF TWO CITIES

Recent trials in the British cities of Bristol and Leicester show the way forward for electronic road pricing in urban areas. In Leicester, around 70 volunteer drivers took part in a trial along an arterial route into the city center; the drivers were given transponders and smart cards for their cars. The aim was to assess motorists reactions to varying road toll levels in the context of the time of day, traffic congestion and pollution. In Bristol around 100 volunteers participated in the project whose aim was to test different ways to persuade drivers to switch to public transit. The preliminary results of these tests seem to indicate that provision of good alternative modes of transportation to the car are crucial to the success of electronic road pricing; there need to be in place viable, timely and cost-effective alternatives to support the non-car journey.
