AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION OF UNITISED CARGO IN PORT TERMINALS - THE INTERPORT PROJECT
INTERPORT, a project within the DGXIII Transport Applications Programme, waterborne sector, demonstrates automatic identification systems and their integration with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and terminal information systems in small and medium size port terminals. Smart Cards and radio frequency tags serve as identification technologies. INTERPORT started in 1/1996 and will be concluded in 12/1998. This paper defines the main areas of interest port terminals and their customers have in automatic identification and in its integration with EDI. It shows which benefits they expect from an implementation. Two INTERPORT test site applications are described as examples of possible set-ups. The role standardisation plays in INTERPORT is outlined. For the covering abstract, see IRRD 490001.
