FRACTURE MECHANICS COMPUTATION METHODS FOR ASPHALT PAVEMENTS WITH SEMI-RIGID BASECOURSES AND THE APPLICATION

Assuming that a thickness-penetrating crack is in a semi-rigid basecourse and the crack has reflected to the surfacing, the stresses and the stress strength factors at the tip of the crack are calculated for the model of Xi'an-Sanyuan highway (in China), under the action of both temperature and loads, using the finite element method; the fatigue lifetime is estimated. The cracking mechanism of asphalt pavements with semi-rigid basecourses on Xi'an-Sanyuan highway is explored. The calculated results indicate that, with regard to Xi'an-Sanyuan highway, load stresses are the main factor influencing pavements, and temperature stesses should also not be ignored, the cracks in basecourses play an important part on the production of the cracking of asphalt pavements, no symmetric loads have a greater influence on the development of cracks than symmetric loads.
