TRUE BEHAVIOUR AND LOAD CAPACITY OF A PSC 'T' BEAM DECK

The aim of the project was to determine the true behaviour and the load capacity of the 'T' beam span of the bridge over the Railway on Weeroona Road, Strathfield West. This bridge was built in 1955, consists of a series PSC 'T' beams transversely prestressed and has a 150 mm thick asphaltic concrete wearing surface. The 'T' beams were designed for HS 20-S 16 live load and they have no shear reinforcement in them. There are similar railway overbridges under the jurisdiction of NSW Railways. The paper discusses the study undertaken by RTA Technology. Analytically lower bound and upper bound load capacities of the deck were determined respectively by modelling the deck as a series of beams and as a plate. The bridge was then proof load tested to determine how close the true deck behaviour is to these boundaries. From the study it is concluded that the deck behaviour is closer to a plate, the actual load capacity of the deck is higher than the current legal load, and the speed limit and load limit may be lifted.
