SETTLEMENT PERFORMANCE OF TWO TEST HIGHWAY EMBANKMENTS ON SANITARY LANDFILL
This paper presents the test procedures and settlements observed from two test highway embankments constructed over sanitary landfill. Test Area 1 was prerolled with a 50-ton roller to compress the foundation refuse material prior to loading with a 10-foot embankment surcharge. Test Area 2 was also loaded with a 10-foot embankment surcharge but the refuse material was not prerolled, but steel reinforcing mats were placed to reduce differential settlements. Test results indicated that prerolling with a 50-ton roller eliminated one quarter of the average total surcharge settlement under a 10-foot embankment. Surcharge loading was of major benefit in accelerating consolidation of the sanitary landfill. The steel reinforcing bar mats appeared to provide no significant advantage in reducing differential settlements.
