ANALYSIS OF TRUCK ACCIDENT REPORTS IN WORK ZONES IN NEW JERSEY

ANALYSE DES ACCIDENTS DE LA ROUTE AU NEW JERSEY IMPLIQUANT DES CAMIONS DANS LES ZONES DE TRAVAIL

There are about 25,000 motor vehicle accidents involving trucks annually in the State of New Jersey. Of these, around 1,300 accidents occurred in work zones statewide and more than 1,000 of which were either on interstate or state arterial highways. Accidents involving trucks are overrepresented in work zones as compared with other types of motor vehicle accidents. This study describes characteristics of truck related motor vehicle accidents in wrk zones, focusing on interstate and state highways. To provide the most comprehensive source of information, hard copies of the original police accident reports, provided by the Bureau of Accident Records of NJDOT. along with their database and the database from New Jersey Turnpike Authority, were analyzed. A database was developed based on all the information provided by the two agencies. Rear-end and sideswipe are the two major types of truck related accidents in work zones. Analyses were carried out to identify the relationship among collision types, severity of the accidents, geometric layout of work zones and characteristics opf the roadway. Coding of and descriptive coverage in the accidents reports were found not to be as accurate as desired. Recommendations are also made regarding the format of accident reports and proper training of police officers since accident reports are the basic source of information for conducting all kinds of traffic safety studies.
