NEW JERSEY FLY ASH AS STRUCTURAL FILL
This paper describes the first phase of a series of studies undertaken to investigate the engineering properties of New Jersey fly ash and to seek the most effective technique to place, compact and stabilize fly ash as structural fill. The engineering properties of New Jersey fly ash vary considerably from those produced in other regions, particularly in the density-strength and permeability characteristics. With proper placement and compaction, New Jersey fly ash is well suited as an adequate structural fill with design pressure of the order of 5 tsf. Placement of fly ash by wet-mixing along with electroosmotic stabilization seems feasible as an effective way to construct a load-bearing fill. The use of vibratory loads as an effective means of compaction also appears promising.
