TRAFFIC DATA MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT
Traffic data plays a major role in the management, design and maintenance of a road network. From top management decisions on regional fund allocations to calculations of gravel loss on a low volume road the need for accurate and appropriate traffic data is obvious. Other traffic data include the calculation of vehicle operating costs in the economic evaluation of road projects, the determination of accident black spots in terms of vehicle kilometers travelled and the setting of design standards for road geometry, pavements and intersections to name but a few. Collection and management of traffic data are discussed in the paper.
