ON THE MINIMUM WEIGHT OF ORTHOGONALLY STIFFENED PLATES UNDER LATERAL PRESSURE
This paper is concerned with the minimum weight design of such stiffened plates as bulkheads, bottom plates and outside platings of ship under lateral pressure. Criteria to decide the scantlings of these plates based on the collapse load of orthogonally stiffened plates, and criterion of deflection were applied to the panel plate. The weight of the stiffened plates was calculated under the assumptions on external pressure, safety factor, aspect ratio of the plate and number of stiffeners. In these calculations, the local buckling of the stiffeners was considered in the ratio of breadth to thickness of web plate or flange plate. The minimum weight of the stiffened plates and the corresponding number of stiffeners were obtained, and the results were compared with the examples of actual ships.
