TRANSPORT CANADA ROAD SAFETY FORUM, OCTOBER 1996, TORONTO, ON

Road crashes in Canada exact a shocking toll. Every year, more than 3,300 Canadians are killed, and 25,000 are seriously injured in more than 700,000 collisions. The cost is staggering - from $10 billion to $25 billion each year. To help combat this epidemic, federal and provincial Ministers of Transport agreed on a series of priorities to achieve the vision of making Canada's roads the safest in the world. Collectively known as Road Safety Vision 2001, these priorities include better awareness of the road safety problems; improved coordination and cooperation amongst road safety agencies; improved enforcement through a number of targeted programs dealing with seat belt use, drink driving, and high risk drivers; and improved data. A Road Safety Forum, that took place in 1996, assembled over 150 Canadian and international experts covering all aspects of road safety: vehicle, driver, road and carrier. This document compiles the Forum presentations and is an expression of the commitment of major partners to improve road safety in Canada.
