REALIZING TORONTO'S TARGET FOR GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION REDUCTIONS -- CURRENT TRENDS AND OUTLOOK : A REPORT ON TRACKING TORONTO'S GHG EMISSIONS AND A 20% REDUCTION STRATEGY
This report addresses a number of important questions: What does the city's commitment to a 20% reduction in emissions really mean "on the ground"? What was the level of greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto in 1990? What would it be in the year 2005, given current trends in population, economic activity and other variables? And finally - what has to be done to bring emissions in the year 2005 down to 80% of 1990 levels? The approach taken to the presentation of this work is to include only a summary here; the details of the method and the results can be found in a report containing technical documentation. The next section of this report describes the inventory and detailed breakdown of greenhouse gas emissions in the City of Toronto in Toronto in 1990. This is followed in Section 3 with a description of the key trends influencing emissions between 1990 and 1995 (the most recent year for which data is complete) and between 1996 and a future year (2005) which we call the "reference projection" year. Section 3 closes with a summary of the 1990, 1995 and year 2005 (reference) inventories. Finally, in Section 4 we describe a scenario of greenhouse gas emissions in the City of Toronto in the 2005 in which the city's 20% target is met through a combination of measures for reducing both energy-related carbon dioxide emissions and methane emissions from organic waste.
