HULL STRENGTH INVESTIGATIONS FOR LARGE SHIPS
Co-operation between the USSR and East Germany has included research, between 1971 and 1975, on hull strength. An item in this research program was entitled "Preparation of recommendations for determining criteria for the total strength of the hulls of large ships in which high-strength steel is used, and criteria for optimum structures in which the necessary fatigue strength, and a saving of working-time in erection and welding, are assured." The work on this program item was carried out by the Akademik Krylov research institute, Leningrad, the Institut fur Schiffbau, Rostock, and the Wilhelm-Pieck University, Rostock. The Authors summarize the more important aspects and conclusions of this joint work, which took into account the increasing use of physically-based strength requirements in Rules for ship classification and construction. The matters dealt with included: (i) Determination of the stresses, due to a seaway, which a ship may expect with given probability during its lifetime; it is mentioned that the analyses made of ships of average size and design represent a first important step towards establishing the strength requirements of large unconventional ships. (ii) Evolving a method for calculating the strength of hull structures under vertical and horizontal bending and in torsion. (iii) Finding comparatively accurate experimental and theoretical methods for determining the external loads, and particularly the torsional loads, in a seaway; a brief account is included of tests with a free-running model, results of which showed generally satisfactory agreement with those calculated. (iv) Analysis of strength and life-span of hull structures under operational loadings; results were in generally satisfactory agreement with the requirements of various classification societies.
