DESIGN OF TUGS FOR COASTAL AND HARBOUR ICEBREAKING DUTY
This article is intended as a check-list for owners or consultants considering new designs for coastal and harbour icebreaking tugs. Among the points mentioned or briefly discussed are: choice of hull lines; ice-cutting blades and ice spurs; hull strengthening; main machinery and torque requirements; ship displacement; cooling-water intakes; steering gear and rudder; cp propellers and overload protection; fitting of ice fins aft; adequate lighting (standby generator sets must start instantly); bridge layout and equipment; insulation from noise; adequacy of heating-boiler; range of "trimability," with tanks located away from danger of freezing; machinery air-intakes; safety of personnel walking on deck; bollards; and stability when the vessel is heavily iced.
