ROLL-ON/ROLL-OFF VESSELS FOR WATERWAY NAVIGATION -- THE TISVE BARGES

The two roll-on/roll-off barges, TISVE I and TISVE II, were built, respectively, by the Ateliers et Chantiers Navals de Chalon-sur Saone and the Societe Francaise de Constructions Navals, Villeneuve-la-Garenne. They are owned by French consortia, and are intended for the carriage of heavy items of cargo (e.g., two nuclear reactor vessels, each weighing up to 450 tonnes) through the French waterways to a port of lading or to a construction site. The barges are not able to transport these cargoes on the smaller waterways, and this has necessitated the building of two of them, one for the Seine-Oise system and the other for the Rhone and Saone. The deadweight is over 2,500 tonnes, but the limiting factor for the roll-on cargoes (on road trailers) is the loading and unloading of the barge. These operations are carried out over a watertight door/ramp at the stern; the ramp is lowered on to the quay, which, in the case of roll-on loads of over 400 t, has to be of special construction to allow the barge stern itself (appropriately ballasted) to rest on a step of the quay. The cargo items, such as reactor vessels, are jacked up for the removal of the trailer or trailers after the cargo has been rolled on. With proper distribution, a load of 1,000 t (e.g., an item weighing 700 t on four trailers each weighing 75 t can be rolled on. The barge hull is of U-section, with a double bottom and double sides; this provides for compartments with a total ballast capacity of 1,680 sq m, enabling the barge (with its cargo protruding above it) to be lowered in the water for passing under low bridges. Two 200-sq m/hr ballast pumps are installed. There is a safety door forward of the stern door/ramp; a board can be placed forward of the safety door to allow heavy bulk cargoes to be carried. The barge is designed for push-towing.
