RO/RO SHIP TRANSGERMANIA

The roll-on/roll-off cargo ship Transgermania, newly built by J.J. Sietas, Hamburg, entered service with Poseidon Schiffahrt F. Ivers & Co. GmbH, of Lubeck, in Nov. 1976. With three Finnish ferries, she operates a regular service between Lubeck and Finland. The vessel complies with passenger-ship safety requirements, and her passenger cabins (for a total of 63) and amenities are of passenger-ship standard; there is no intention, however, to run a passenger service, and this accommodation is primarily for the lorry drivers. Cargoes are rolled on over a stern ramp at main-deck level, from which there are lifts to the tank top and upper deck; provision has been made for the possible later addition of a bow port. Cargo is carried on the tank top, the main deck, the upper deck, and B deck (the deck above the upper deck). The container capacity is thus 362 x 20-ft boxes (on trailers). The passenger (i.e. lorry drivers') accommodation is on B deck, which also has open-air stowage for 60 cars. The tank-top cargo-space and the main deck can be heated for the carriage of fruit and vegetables during the winter. The after part of the upper deck is open to the weather and can accommodate dangerous cargoes prohibited from the closed spaces. The main deck is fitted out for the carriage of newsprint without damage. Heavy-lift items of cargo can be carried. The article gives further information on the ship and, in particular, her cargo arrangements, and includes general arrangement drawings showing the layout of all the decks.
