ICE RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS IN RIDGES WITH I.B. APU IN THE BALTIC SEA

In April 1974, a trail was carried out with the Finnish icebreaker APU to measure the resistance of ships in ice ridges in the Baltic Sea. Most of the 11 ridges encountered were so massive that they had to be rammed. When the ship was penetrating a ridge resistance was determined by registering propeller revolutions and speed, the latter by means of a Doppler radar. When the ship was stopped by a ridge, she was extricted by reversing and accelerating for another ram. Time history was registered to determine speed of advance. The APU is one of the nine Baltic icebreakers operated by the Finnish Board of Navigation for assisting merchant ships to and from the Finnish ports.
