SULZER'S NEW ENGINE DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM

The Sulzer Engine Diagnostic System (SEDS) is an on-line automatic data-acquisition and interpretation system using a digital mini-computer, and is intended to overcome the economic problems set by scheduled maintenance schemes for diesel engines. It gives an instant analysis of the performance and running condition of the engine, (as well as those of the air coolers and turbochargers) and enables a trend analysis to be made. The performance analysis indicates the maintenance work needed by the engine; built-in alarms prevent a breakdown and the trend analysis indicates when and which components have to be repaired or replaced. The overall aim is to ensure that as little maintenance work as necessary is undertaken to enable the engine always to operate at optimum performance.
