AN AUTOMATED X-RAY MICROPROBE CAN RELIEVE THE FATIGUE IN REPETITIVE ANALYSES AND YIELD EXCELLENT SPEED AND PRECISION

An automated x-ray microprobe is described which can relieve fatigue in repetitive analyses and yield excellent speed and precision. The Cambridge Microscan 9 interfaces the microprobe with a Digital Equipment PDP II minicomputer, using appropriate software. Desirable characteristics of the program are listed, and a table showing the typical format of Microscan 9 results is presented. Spectrometer control and the options allowed by the program are outlined, and comments are made on the general analysis program. The program is comprehensive and flexible, allowing automatic semiquantitative or quantitative analyses to be performed. There are several different options the operator may choose. A system such as this can be used in industrial and academic research in metallurgy, material science, geology, mineralogy, refractories, ceramics and pollution studies.
