DETERMINATION OF WAVE-MAKING RESISTANCE OF A SHIP BY THE METHOD OF WAVE ANALYSIS

Several methods were recently proposed for the purpose of direct determination of wave-making resistance from the measured wave pattern. Among them, the method based on the Fourier transform of the wave profile at the longitudinal cut seems to be excellent. The authors applied this method to the measured wave profiles of three models of the simple shape and computed their wave-making resistances. The results are in good agreement with those of towing tests enough to show effectiveness of wave analysis. It is discussed in part 1 how to estimate the unavoidable error due to the measurement at a finite distance sideways from the ship, since this method of wave analysis is derived from the asymptotic expression of the wave pattern at an infinite distance from the ship. In part 2 we point out that the real wave-making characteristics of a ship are obtained by calculating the spectrum and the amplitude function of free wave from measured wave profiles. The authors make an attempt to study the problem of determination of the equivalent source distribution from the amplitude function of free wave.
