BASIC DESIGN OF A FLUID BRAKE USED IN THE MOORING OF OFFSHORE PLATFORMS IN DEEP SEA

In mooring an offshore platform, anchoring operation must be completed in the shortest possible period in order to avoid the effects of tidal current and wind force. In this case, problems are the control of the dropping speed of the chain within a safety limit by means of a brake and the treatment of heat generated by braking. The weight of the anchor chain to be dropped in deep sea anchoring, in particular, is so heavy that the amount of heat generated in braking is beyond the heat absorbing capacity of the conventional brakes. The hydraulic brake developed by MHI can be effectively used for such a purpose. In this paper, the authors introduce a theoretical calculation method of chain speed, the amount of heat generated by braking and time required for anchoring when this hydraulic brake is used. An actual example of anchoring an oil drilling rig to a 500 meter-deep water area is also introduced.
