A 1200-TON GOLIATH SHIPYARD CRANE
In today's modern shipyard, an important tool is a crane of heavy lift capacity. A 1200-ton gantry crane, with a span of 119 m (390 ft) between the rails, was recently put into service at the Quincy Shipbuilding Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts. The paper discribes some design aspects of the crane and the assembly and erection of this massive engineering structure.
