LT. COL. PASLEY ON RETAINING WALLS
Sections from Charles Pasley's book, "Course of Elementary Foritification", Vol. 2, 1817 are highlighted, and an attempt is made to see how Pasley's experimental results compared with those of modern conventional retaining wall theory. Pasley emphasized the need for not stopping on finding a hard stratum but boring deeper to ascertain if the thickness is sufficient to ensure safety. Pasley also set out generally accepted rules for the design of revetments. Pasley considered 3 modes of failure, of overturning about the toe, sliding, and foundation failure. Comments are made on Pasleys observations on earth pressure and his publication: "Rules on Revetment" Pasley's experimental results are good and consistent and prove that in applying conventional retaining wall theories one must be careful about the assumptions.
