INERTING WITH NATURAL GAS HAS ADVANTAGES
The author discusses several major advantages of inerting crude-carrying tankers and storage tanks with natural gas instead of boiler stack gas. Tanker gas-blanketing improves safety, eliminates vaporization emissions, and saves fuel costs. Inerting with natural gas is also advantageous because it accommodates fixed-roof tank terminals. In view of current concern for tanker safety, tanker and port controls necessary in the event the future tankers are inerted with natural gas should be considered.
