DEEPWATER SLOPES VS MOORING PERFORMANCE

The capability of the mooring system for deepwater drilling is more critical than for a shallow water program, as shown by this article about the drillship Regional Endeavour which is drilling in deepwater, steeply sloped areas on the southern Australian shelf. The drillship drilled three wells in water depths to 1260 ft with a conventional chain mooring system. Problems associated with the running of the anchors and the chain failure are discussed, and some solutions are presented. It is concluded that the use of conventional mooring system for future deepwater drilling appears somewhat limited.
