SPECIAL REPORT: OIL SPILLS
Developments in oil spill recovery techniques and equipment are reported. A mechanized sorbent oil spill recovery system, developed by the CEL, uses 3.6 million polyurethane foam chips/hr to absorb up to 50,000 gal of spilled oil. Lockheed Missiles and Space Company has successfully tested a radio-controlled oil skimmer designed to sweep refinery pond surfaces and recover approximately 40 gpm, and Marine Construction and Design Company has decreased the response time of its Class I oil spill recovery vessel by increasing its speed to 20 kn. A 24-ft prototype oil spill recovery boat, to be constructed by the Gulf-Tampa Drydock Company, will use ferromagnetic polyfoam to recover approximately 2,400 gph/kn of spilled oil. Two Norwegian designs based on trawling principles are also being developed. JBF Scientific Export Corporation is building an oil recovery vessel which will have a recovered oil storage capacity of 10,000 gal. Its system is based on a moving inclined plane extending from just above the water surface to a collection well underneath the unit. An Al oil skimmer designed by Seaward International for confined waters weighs only 36 lb and has a recovery capacity of 1,800 gph. Sandvick Conveyor has designed a catamaran-type oil skimming vessel with a capacity of 50 TPH of heavy oil.
