ON VISCOUS FLOW ABOUT BLUFF BODY AT HIGH REYNOLDS NUMBER
This paper presents an analytical model for the viscous flow past blunt bodies with well separated turbulent boundary layer at high Reynolds numbers. The eddy viscosity in the wake is assumed to be constant and the flow is obtained approximately by solving Oseen equation with assumed boundary conditions. The separation point can be determined by a matching technique between the turbulent boundary layer on the body surface and the Oseen flow in the outer region. This method is applied to the flow past a circular cylinder at a supercritical Reynolds number. The calculated pressure distribution over the surface and the velocity variation in the cross section of the wake are shown to coincide with the measured values. In the analysis of this method Oseen's asymptotic solution at infinite Reynolds number is modified and corrected so as to be applied to the case with an arbitrary separation point. This is perturbed to the first order approximation expressing a viscous effect of the wake flow in the high Reynolds number range.
