DEFORMABILITY OF HYDRAULIC BINDERS AND ITS EFFECT ON THE DEFORMABILITY OF ROADBASES STABILIZED WITH HYDRAULIC BINDERS
DEFORMABILITE DES LIANTS HYDRAULIQUES ET INCIDENCES SUR LA DEFORMABILITE DES ASSISES TRAITEES AUX LIANTS HYDRAULIQUES
The author summarizes the investigations carried out at the CERILH into the following: (1) liability of hydraulic binders to deformation; (2) deformability and creep; (3) study of fillerized gravel-cement mixtures (a) modification in fissuration by use of deformable binders and improvement in the homogeneity of gravel; (b) increase in the workability time of gravel-cement by means of retarders. These laboratory results are compared with those obtained in-situ in road construction sites in Brittany. The main trends which seem worthwhile following are: use of a binder with a low initial strength and very progressive hardening; use of retarders adapted to the type of site and its specific conditions; use of cement containing ingredients susceptible to reduce the sensitivity of gravel-cement to variations in water content; investigation into cracking with a view to obtaining a nearly continuous pavement through a "meshing" effect; possible use of air-entraining agents to increase the compaction of gravel, the given energy of compaction, and therefore its mechanical behaviour (behaviour in the presence of frost), and its deformability. /TRRL/
