DETERMINATION OF THE BULK DENSITY OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES DURING APPLICATION BY RADIOACTIVE METHOD

DETERMINATION DU POIDS SPECIFIQUE APPARENT DES ENROBES HYDROCARBONES PAR VOIE RADIOACTIVE EN COURS DE MISE EN OEUVRE

The gamma ray back-scattering measuring technique was experimentally applied with a view to evaluating the efficiency of the compaction of hot-coated materials, -4 to 7cm thick; with this aim in view the bulk density was measured. A patented device was developed to simplify this type of technique on the construction site. The measuring apparatus can be affixed directly on the compacting machine, and it is fitted with an automatic system for taking measurements. This non-destructive test takes a minimum of thirty seconds. During that time, the gauge continuously tests the layer being compacted. The statistical significance (95%) of the results obtained is equal to more or less 0.08 grammes per cubic centimeter, in the range of 2.2 to 2.45 grammes per cubic centimeter. This type of test facilitates the determination of the number of passes beyond which the state of compaction ceases to evolve, and it gives a rapid evaluation of the bulk density of the layers being laid. /TRRL/
