NEW INFORMATION ON THE VOEST-ALPINE STEEL SNOW BARRIERS

NEUE ERKENNTNISSE UEBER DIE VOEEST-ALPINE STAHLSCHNEEBRUECKEN

In Austria, 4370 avalanches threaten railways, roads and paths. More than two-thirds of the structures built as protection against avalanches are steel structures, which check the debris from snow avalanches and provide protection against rockfalls. Proven prefabricated steel foundations are discussed and tied foundations with rails driven into loose soil, and steel anchor rods in rock are described. With these a reduction in the excavation quantities results. Protective barriers against sliding snow are described. These comprise vertical structures with arched beams and vertical steel structures with foundation slabs which increase the volume of bench material retained. Detailed tables provide data on load carrying coefficients, foundation loads, results of withdrawal tests for driven piles, ultimate-shear-stresses, excavation volumes and labour required. /TRRL/
