CONTACT AND PROCESS OF WEAR BETWEEN STUDDED TYRES AND PAVEMENT SURFACE
KONTAKT-UND VERSCHLEISSVORGANG ZWISCHEN SPIKES-REIFEN UND FAHRBAHDECKE
Criteria are advanced, based on sound technical observations, from which one may decide on the optimum middle course between excessive public expenditure and increased safety for winter drivers. In determining safety, the tyre-road adhesion is derived, for which an increase or loss can be theoretically established. The experimental results of various researchers are described. The importance of considering the number of studs emerges, as well as the deleterious effect of studs on cross-ply tyres. The wear of the surfacing is studied taking account of the kinematics of the stud-impact process. The impact velocity increases sharply with the projection and the impact force increases with the velocity and the stud mass. This, and the consideration of the rate of sliding, lead to the following conclusions: the smallest possible stud weight is to be recommended with the smallest possible projection as well as the use of radial tyres. This is also supported by the test results. A decrease in velocity without control of the stud projections can be ineffective. /TRRL/
