THE DIMENSIONS OF A CHILD'S TRAFFIC WORLD
DIMENSIONEN DER VERKEHNSWELT VON KINDERN
The behaviour of children in road traffic was studied in relation to their ages. It was shown that small children, around the ages of 4 to 5, are particularly at risk in road traffic because their behaviour in crossing a road is very spontaneous. In a study of the behaviour at stop signals of children of various age groups, it was discovered that young children do not react immediately to the signals, as is necessary in road traffic. In addition, the knowledge of traffic rules is considerably greater in the case of older children than for younger children. However, greater knowledge of traffic does not necessarily lead to safer behaviour on the roads. Furthermore it was established that girls behave more carefully than boys. An examination of the type of accidents involving children shows that small children suffer particularly severe accidents if the visibility of the driver is reduced; here the blame lies with the children. Less severe accidents occur at crossings with high traffic densities, where the blame generally lies with the drivers. Measures for the reduction of accidents to children should be extended to age related traffic education, improvement of the traffic education of adults, identification of particularly accident prone blackspots etc. /TRRL/
