STEP-ING TO SUCCESS
The author discusses the use of the step course with a moped in the curriculum of a special school. It is possible for esn children to learn to ride and maintain the machine passing a test similar to that of cycling proficiency. The author shows how a study of the various aspects of riding and running the moped can lead to an appreciation of other subjects such as mathematics and English. The course can provide a measure of success essential to the self esteem and good progress of esn children. The children have responded well to all teaching and are able to recognise good and bad riding habits. They have become more aware of their relationship to the road environment; both the step aims of safer roadcraft and a change of attitude of road use and road users are achieved. /TRRL/
