DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTROMAGNETIC GEAR FOR PRACTICAL USE IN SHIP PROPULSION SYSTEM
An electromagnetic gear model unit having a capacity of 16000 hp was tested first in combination with two electric motors connected to the input and the output shafts, and then in combination with a 16000 hp "kawasaki man v14v 52/55" type medium-speed four-cycle diesel engine. It was found that: a) The efficiency of the electromagnetic gear was 95% at input rates of 16000 to 20000 hp, b) The temperature rise of the armature winding of the stator was only 60 deg c, c) The temperature rise of damper winding was very low and, d) The rotational direction of the outer rotor could be changed smoothly.
